DEAN MOTTER has worked as art director, designer, illustrator and writer in the entertainment and publishing industries for over twenty years. Following a stint as staff illustrator for Holt Rinehart and Winston of Canada, he went on to become Art Director at CBS Records Canada.
He later formed his own studio, Diagram Studios, aka Modern Imageworks. During that time he designed numerous record jackets and posters as well as continuing to illustrate children’s books.
He was responsible for the covers for many major Canadian recording acts including Loverboy,The Nylons,Triumph and Anne Murray. His work has won several awards including two Juno Awards (the Canadian counterpart to the Grammy award) for album cover design. He also created promotional graphics and stage designs for several performers and stadium events.
He created the ’80s comic book sensation, Mister X which was relaunched in 2008 for the 21st century by Dark Horse Comics and continues to receive accolades. In 2015 Rolling Stone recognized Mister X as one of "The 50 Best Non-Superhero Graphic Novels." He also wrote and illustrated the graphic novel, The Prisoner, based on Patrick McGoohan's television series of the ‘60s and the award-winning noir graphic novel Batman: Nine Lives for DC Comics.
In 1990 Dean left Toronto for New York City. He took on the role of Editorial Art Director for Byron Preiss Visual Publications, a major packager of science- fiction, fantasy and children's illustrated books.There he had the opportunity to work with such notable authors as Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Harlan Ellison and Roger Zelazny. His design and art direction for the modern comic book adaptations of Ray Bradbury's works earned him his first Eisner Award nomination.
Dean then took up the Creative Services Art Director's post at Time Warner/DC Comics, where he oversaw the corporate and licensing designs of America’s most beloved comic book characters such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. In his off-hours he went on to create, write and design the highly acclaimed, retro-futuristic comic book series, Terminal City-- and its sequels, Aerial Graffiti and Electropolis.
Currently Dean makes his home in Georgia where, under the Futura Novelty Co. banner, he continues to create graphic works in the entertainment, book publishing and comic book industries.
